Guest Workshop Say Yes to “No”: Maintaining Agency as a Character and Player in a Yes, And… World

Guest Workshop: Say Yes to “No”: Maintaining Agency as a Character and Player in a Yes, And… World

“Yes, and…” is a foundational tool in improvisation but, when taken literally, can become a barrier to exploring deeper truths in our characters and may even create environments that hurt us as players.

This workshop is all about embracing “No!” as a word that real characters really say, and how the use of it can still affirm the reality of the scene while adding depth. We will focus on maintaining the principles of “Yes, and…” while finding all the ways our characters can say “No.” Special attention will also be paid to how “No” is an important and valid tool for maintaining personal safety as a player in a scene.

We will be saying the word “No!” a lot in this workshop, but all exercises will be extremely affirmative. A primary goal is to show how, in improv, negation can be constructive, friendly, and fun!
