ComedySportz Relocates to Dish Out Family-Friendly Improv on the Northwest Side

ComedySportz, an improvisation group similar to ABC-TV’s “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” is relocating its home venue to the Acting Up Creative Drama Academy at 12002 Bandera Rd., Suite 104, behind Falcon Bank (outside the loop at Bandera and 1604). Previously, ComedySportz had a 14-year run at the Rivercenter Comedy Club.

The inaugural performance at the new location takes place on Saturday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m., with a standing show time of Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Students and military personnel with IDs, along with seniors over 55 who show their drivers licenses, can receive a $2 discount off the ticket price.

ComedySportz has been a fixture in San Antonio entertainment since 1994, offering a fun, fast-paced comedy show for the entire family including churches, business conferences, parties and special events. Two teams battle for laughs and points as they make up scenes, games and songs from audience suggestions. The audience votes for the winners, and a referee calls the fouls.

The San Antonio ComedySportz team is a member of the World Comedy League, which has teams throughout the U.S. and in England and Germany. The San Antonio group performed during two Tours for the Troops overseas, and its alumni have starred in several Second City shows. Second City is the improv venue that boasts “Saturday Night Live” alumni such as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, and Tina Fey.

Shows are open to the public. No reservations are required.

ComedySportz is fast-paced, family-friendly improvisational comedy, played as a sport. Two teams of comedians take turns making up scenes, playing games and singing songs – and the audience votes on which team they like the best. It's all presided over by a referee who calls the ComedySportz fouls and takes suggestions shouted out by the audience before each game.

If you've seen TV's Whose Line Is It Anyway? you've got the basic idea, although ComedySportz's two-team competitive format ensures a fast-paced, high-energy show - and seeing this live show is very different from watching a TV show.

ComedySportz is back in action on October 10th!

We're still looking for a new home, but we're also on the prowl for ways to bring the funny to San Antonio.  And we'll be doing that this Saturday in two different locations!

First, we'll be putting on a full show at Edgewood ISD's Memorial High School!  That's right, we're taking it to the West Side.  Showtime is 6pm in the auditorium, and the ticket price is only $5!  As a bonus, half of the ticket price will go toward supporting the Memorial drama and improv teams!

If that wasn't fun enough, we will feature a showcase of Memorial High School improv students before our show.  Brandi Corona, Margaret Cuevas, Angelek Marler, and Alex Urdiales will be showing their talents in a special exhibition before the La Vernia Shirleys and the San Antonio Armadillos battle in head-to-head comedy action!  We also have a guest ComedySportz player in town from Buffalo, NY, for the show!

ComedySportz will also be participating in the Rx Art fundraiser and preview at Bihl Haus Arts on Fredericksburg Rd.  Fundraiser tickets are $65 ($75 at the door), and ComedySportz is just part of the activities that your admission buys.

So come out to either of these two events to get your comedy fix!
